The Central Library was first started in 1998 in block A of the Hospital to serve the Super Specialty departments therein. The Amrita School of Medicine was started in 2002 and then the Central Library was shifted to the  block C with a view to cater to the requirements of  the Medical College in addition to the Super Specialty hospital. Central library also provides reference facilities for the students and the faculty of other Schools in the campus, the Nursing, Dental and Pharmaceutical Sciences, even though these Schools have their own individual libraries provided with books for their specific requirements.

Cataloguing and arrangement of books on the shelves have been done using the National Library of Medicine (NLM) USA Classification system.
